Teaser Tuesday with J. A. Campbell

Hahahah, this is really really old. Still love the concept, but it really needs to be totally rewritten if I’m going to do anything with it. It’s from a serial story series I was working on called Vampire Colony. Yes, vampires in space. Don’t laugh, a lot of people actually really liked it way back when 🙂

Mitch jumped forward and grabbed the man by his shoulder before he could do more.

“Haven’t you heard?”

The guy doubled over and his breath whooshed out of him as Mitch’s fist connected with his gut.

“That you’re not supposed to hit a lady?”

The man gasped something derogatory sounding and Mitch let him fall to the ground.

The woman was leaning against the wall, holding her face.

Mitch touched her shoulder and she shrieked and tried to hit him. Mitch quickly grabbed her hands, and had no trouble holding her as she struggled. He was very strong.

“Easy, easy. I’m not going to hurt you.”

He had to repeat himself before she finally started to listen. She looked at him, eyes wide.

“Are you ok?”

“My face hurts,” she muttered.

He released her hands when she stopped struggling. Mitch glanced over his shoulder. The guy he’d hit and his buddy were gone. Too bad, would have been fun to play with them a bit.

“Can I look at it?”

“Sure.” She looked at him warily.

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

The woman glanced over his shoulder.

“Point. But if I were going to I probably would have while I still had a hold of you.”

“True.” She visibly relaxed.

Mitch stepped closer and tilted her chin up with his hand. Her face was beat up but it didn’t look like her nose was actually broken. There was bruising around her nose and eyes though and the lower half of her face was covered in blood.

“I think your nose is ok.”

“Good, it hurts like hell though.” Her voice sounded a bit congested.

“I imagine it does.”

She sniffed a few times.

“We should get you somewhere to get that cleaned up.”

She nodded and Mitch offered her his arm. She hesitantly put hers through his and let him lead her out of the alley.

“I’m Mitch,” he said, remembering that he hadn’t introduced himself.

“Natalia. Thank you for saving me.”
