So what exactly is a Brown blog tour? Glad you asked. Brown is a Border Collie living in the old west in the early 1900’s with her person, Elliott. Together they hunt ghosts, and other creatures on occasion. The tour is to promote her stories so that the world can know how awesome she is. Today I’ll tell you a little about her inspiration, tomorrow kicks off the “read-a-long.” I wrote a special story just for the blog tour and a segment of it will post every day for five days and at the end, a special treat, a word from Brown herself. There’s even a giveaway. See below for details.
Who is Brown? Where did she come from? Why write from a Dog’s point of view? (Any other questions that I don’t answer here? Feel free to leave a comment and ask them. I’ll answer.)
I’ll start with a very brief history of the Border Collie. One of the first recognized Border Collies was Old Hemp. He was born in 1893 and was one of the first of the herding dogs of a newer, quieter herding style using body movements and the Border Collie Eye to move sheep instead of aggressively chasing and biting the sheep. Though herding dogs, and Border Collie type herding dogs have existed for much longer, the breed truly began with him and a handful of others.
Brown is a direct descendent of Old Hemp. Her mother was brought over from the old country to the eastern United States while pregnant and had her puppies soon after arriving in the states. She was born on a sheep farm and quickly and happily went to work. That’s where she met Elliott. He was working on the farm and she took a liking to him. Eventually, she was given to him by the farm owner as a thank you for all his hard work. Once Elliott was done with his education, he saw an opportunity to make money by making people think he and Brown hunted ghosts. She was so smart and easy to train that this was a successful venture until someone figured out there were no ghosts, then Elliott had to flee west before he was arrested, or lynched. Brown, of course, accompanied him.
They found it easier to work their trade in the west until they were summoned to Miller, Colorado, where they met their first real ghost. You can read about that misadventure in Saloon of Doom. The story for this blog tour directly follows that first adventure.
Her story indirectly starts back in the fall of 2010 when Devin O’Branagan asked me to write a vampire themed flash fiction story. At the time I couldn’t write a short story to save my life….They all turned into novels. One day I was sitting at my computer working on something else when inspiration struck. Well, really, my own Border Collie, Kira, was bored and brought me a toy. My chair sits with the back to the doorway and she was staring at my back. I knew she was there because I could feel her Eye on me, and was all… ‘huh, if I can feel that, I bet a vampire can.’ Thus Doc, vampire-hunting dog, was born. He catches vampires with his Eye and his human stakes them. Then in 2012 I learned about weird westerns and thought it would be fun to write them. I thought about writing a vampire hunting dog in the old west and was toying with the idea when I got invited to submit to an old west ghost story anthology. Brown’s character, story concept, and the first story just kind of crashed down on me… and it hasn’t been hard to think up more stories for her, rather it’s been challenging to let them sit while I work on other projects. She’s a super fun dog to write about. Incidentally, Doc is her ancestor.
Why from a dog’s POV?
Why not? It seemed like a fun challenge and a POV rarely tackled and I thought I had a pretty good handle on Border Collies so I gave it a try with Doc. It worked so well that I kept with it. From the feedback I’ve gotten, people enjoy my stories and the POV.
Okay, enough from me. Here’s the schedule and below is the give-away. Be sure to check out her story, leave some comments and enter the give-away!
