I was about to leave when a shrill, inhuman cry split the night. It seemed to vibrate in my bones, sending shards of metaphorical glass through my core, shredding my body as if it was tissue paper. I clutched my ears, trying to drown it out, certain if it kept going, my mind would shatter like crystal.
