Doc VHD – A Christmas Tail

“This one.”

I looked up from my game of tug with my sister.  A pair of hands reached for me and I stood up on my back legs, reaching for them with my nose.  They smelled wonderful, though I couldn’t identify the smells but they made me happy.

The human let me sniff her hands then she picked me up and held me against her warm body.  I wiggled in pleasure, licking her hand and then her face.

She laughed making me even happier.  I tucked my head under her chin and sighed in pleasure.  Her smells made me so happy that I didn’t even care when she carried me away from my littermates.  I wiggled while she talked to my mother’s human.

“Say goodbye little one,” my mother’s human said to me after a while.

I looked at her and tilted my head.  My mother had told me about goodbye, how a human would come and take me for their very own.

I barked once.  My mother trotted in from the other room and perked her ears forward.  She whined then smiled at me.  I wiggled my tail and yipped once.  I was so happy I’d found my human.

My human put me in a small container next to her.  There was a soft blanket and I laid down on it, content to watch her.  A loud noise startled me and I cried a little, but my human wasn’t worried and I trusted her so I tried to relax.

She kept me in the small box while she sat next to me for a long time, but finally the rumble stopped and she picked me up again and held me close to her.  I told her how happy I was that she was my person by licking her face.

She laughed.  “Quiet now pup.  You’re a surprise.”

I grinned at her.

“Honey, come in here for a minute,” my human yelled.  “Now stay here,” she said to me.  She put me down under a tree with lights on it.  There were little colorful boxes around me.  I wagged my tail and tried to stay put.  It was hard but I manage to stay until the other human walked into the room.  Then I couldn’t contain myself anymore.  I jumped forward, wiggling and yipping.

The other human knelt down and picked me up.  I liked his smell too, it was like my human’s smell.  I licked his face.

“You didn’t…”  He laughed when he said it.

“What do you want to name him?” my human asked the human holding me.

“Doc.  Let’s call him Doc.”

“A good name for a Border Collie.”

I yipped in agreement.
